Journalism, C-L style

The twister traveled down one of Hattiesburg’s main streets and mangled homes, commercial buildings and structures on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi.

Is there some special reason why the name of the street can’t be mentioned anywhere in the story? From a photo caption, I gather it’s Hardy, but who knows? Is Hattiesburg like some provincial capital in Central Asia, where street names wouldn’t mean anything to the local reader?

  1. That story’s been picked up internationally, and Hardy St. wouldn’t mean much to most of the readers. Everybody understands the significance of a tornado on a main street is, though. Now, whether the CL thought it through and decided not to use the street name on purpose is another question….

  2. I watched WDAM in Hattiesburg for much of the nite. They could not show anything but a radar screen. WLBT, WAPT and WJTV much the same. I stopped watching at about 7:30 but the only real coverage with some You tube stuff and interviews was from CNN. I think the local news folks must be poorly staffed although they manage to cover MVAs pretty well. If you want Johnny on the spot coverage look on You Tube.
